Food Insecurity
While we can be thankful that most of our community doesn't suffer from a lack of food security, there are those among us that do.
In 2018, 3,978 Kawartha Lakes residents (including 1,355 children) needed to visit and rely on a food bank, and that number is trending upwards.
The 2019 Hunger Report from Feed Ontario (formerly the Ontario Association of Food Banks) reported that 510,438 more people used a food bank in 2019 than in 2018.
1,500lbs Donated in 2019
Throughout the 2019 season we were very happy to be able to donate roughly 1,500 pounds of fresh produce to our local food banks.
Most of our donated produce was provided to Kawartha Lakes Food Source, a charitable organization that supplies and supports food banks throughout the Kawartha Lakes. It turns out 2019 was their best year ever in terms of produce donations and we're thrilled our farm was able to provide 22% of that total (source).
