Weekly Update: August 27th

It's hard to believe we're nearing the end of August. It feels that not so long ago we were dealing with backup zucchini transplants and getting organized for the start of the farmers market.

August Temperatures

With the end of August comes the heat and unsurprisingly this past week has been, and likely will be, the hottest of the year. This week's heat has been accompanied by very high humidity, making the air feel thick and the sweat runneth easily.

Bell Peppers

This week we're happy to be including Bell Peppers for the first time this season. As the peppers ripen from a dark green into a lighter green and then ultimately a dark to a deep red they become sweeter tasting.

We harvest at different stages of ripeness depending on conditions and how the plants are doing but peppers will continue to ripen once picked too. To help peppers ripen off the plant, you can try placing them in a warm and sunny place, like a windowsill.

This Week's Share

  • Head Lettuce

  • Salad Mix

  • Zucchini

  • Salad Turnips

  • Bell Peppers

  • Bunching Onions

  • Cherry Tomatoes

Food Bank Support

This season we've donated over 1,900 pounds of fresh produce to our local food banks through the Kawartha Lakes Food Source. Our donations are made possible by the support of our CSA members. Thanks so much!
