Weekly Update: July 16th

Today has been a bit of a strange day. We had a productive morning and early afternoon, and then our phones started buzzing with warnings of tornadoes. We got a real downpour but are happy to report there hasn't been any damaging weather.

Veggie Debuts

We're happy to let you know that this week's shares will include carrots and bunching onions.

A well known fact about carrots is that they help your eyes

and improve vision at night. A less well known fact is that's mostly a myth, a

result of British public relations during the second world war, where the government wanted to encourage the consumption of carrots due to food shortages.

Carrots are rich in Vitamin-A, a fat soluble vitamin, and so they are best consumed with fat if one's goal is to extract the maximum dietary benefit. Now you can justify an accompanying ranch dip!

Chickens

Earlier this year we mentioned a fellow farmer up the road from us who produces eggs. We'd like to let you know that he has meat birds available for sale. If you're interested in a local, pasture grazed chickens from a healthy and happy environment, give Michael a call at 647-992-9453.

This Week's Share

This week's shares will include:

  • Head Lettuce

  • Salad Mix

  • Beets

  • Cucumbers

  • Carrots

  • Bunching Onions

  • Kale

Next Week's Share

Next week's share will include more beets, carrots, and bunching onions. As expected there will be lettuce and salad mix, and we expect everyone to see a share of Zucchini.

Food Bank Support

As you may know, throughout the season we make weekly donations to local area food banks. The bulk of our donations go to the Kawartha Lakes Food Source in Lindsay, a charitable organization that acts as a distributor to 11 food banks throughout the Kawartha Lakes.

So far this season we've donated over 650 pounds of fresh produce, all made possible by our CSA members. Thanks so much!
