Weekly Update: July 30th

This past week was delightfully uneventful. We received a healthy but not disruptive dose of rain and a day or two of high heat was balanced with a bit of breeze relief and calm, more mild evenings.

We're just about ready to harvest our crop of garlic, which we'll hang and dry for a few weeks prior to including them in our shares. This is our first time growing garlic at scale and we're both excited and curious to see what you think.

Nightshades - Tomatoes & Peppers

After a long journey that began indoors back in March, our tomato and pepper plants are now producing at more than a trickle and we're happy to be including them in this weeks shares.

Some shares will contain bell peppers and others cherry tomatoes. In the coming weeks as the tomatoes pick up steam we expect to include them in all shares on a regular basis.

We also have hot and spicy banana peppers that are coming along nicely and hope to share with you in the coming weeks.

We know that not everyone is a fan of such heat so we won't subject you to too many hot peppers. If you do like them, let us know and we can adjust the shares accordingly!

Tomato Storage

Just a quick tip on storing tomatoes. Most refrigerators are too cool to optimally store tomatoes for flavour. If you want to keep your tomatoes tasting their best, keep them in a relatively cool, dry, and shaded place. They should remain firm and tasty for about a week, until the next share!

This Week's Share

  • Head Lettuce

  • Salad Mix

  • Zucchini

  • Carrots

  • Bunching Onions

  • Green Beans

  • Kale

  • Nightshades

Food Bank Support

So far this season we've donated over 1,200 pounds of fresh produce to our local food banks through the Kawartha Lakes Food Source, all made possible by our CSA members. Thanks so much!
